A Perfect Storm: Austin Arts Today takes a look at the faces and the stories of Austin's working musicians, artists, performers and producers as they grapple with personal and professional challenges in order to keep making the art that Austin is known for today.
Austin is facing a multi-fold arts crisis in funding, space and a long-term deficit of public will to support the arts. It can be said that Austin's arts ecosystem lacks a safety net for the ups and downs caused by an unstable economy, the pandemic, and current cuts in local, federal and corporate funding.
Austin currently does not have a foundation devoted to arts support nor does it have a Business Council for the Arts. Until the establishment of A3 Art Alliance Austin in 2024, Austin did not have a Local Arts Agency when more than 4000 cities and towns across the U.S. utilize this type of non-profit to support the arts through funding and public education.
A Perfect Storm: Austin Arts Today was conceived of by A3's Executive Director Laura Esparza with essays by Dr. Gil Cardenas and Dr. Heather Barfield and photographs by Roj Rodriguez to illuminate the crisis that Austinites must face in order to save the very thing that makes Austin a vibrant city.
